Junior preparations get off to winning start

Our Junior side began their 2017 SuperCupNI preparations with a win in the Gerry Reynolds Cup in Belfast on Sunday.

The four team tournament consisted of County Down, County Fermanagh, County Armagh and Wexford Sheffield Wednesday development squad.

Down were drawn to play Armagh in the first semi final and in a entertaining game in hot conditions Down won a tight game 2-1 with Ben Hollinger and Ross Hunter getting the goals.

Awaiting Down in the final was County Fermanagh who had earlier won their semi final comfortably against Wexford.

After a edgy opening with Fermanagh on top, Hollinger opened the scoring against the run of play after fine work by Eoin Teggart on the wing. This seemed to settle the young Down players and the game evened out.

Soon after, a superb deep cross from Cian Gantley had Fermanagh’s keeper back peddling and with both Hollinger and George Tipton challenging he was unable to keep the ball out and it dropped into the net to give Down a two nil lead at the interval.

An Eion Teggart double after the break gave Down a 4-0 victory to end an enjoyable day’s football and County Down were presented with the Gerry Reynolds Cup.

Callum McVeigh was voted County Down’s player of the tournament while Dylan Boyle completed a successful day winning the overall player of the tournament.

A special mention goes to Alex Hasson/ Friends Select Academy chairman for organising this special event in the memory of Gerry Reynolds.

Introducing our 2017 squads

We are pleased to announce the names of the 36 boys who have been chosen to represent County Down at this year’s SuperCupNI.

Following an intensive trials process which took place during April, team managers and coaches gave much consideration to the players who would make up this year’s Junior and Premier squads.

The standards shown during the trials were very high, but ultimately decisions must be made on who we can take to the tournament. We would like to thank every boy who tried out for this year’s team and if you were not successful on this occasion, we strongly encourage you to keep playing the game you love, keep practicing and we hope you will emerge a stronger player for having been through the trials process.

We offer our congratulation to the boys who have been chosen for this year’s teams and we look forward to working with you when training begins at the start of June. The hard work starts now!

Ex-Down players dominate cup winning side

Former Down player Andrew Waterworth was the cup final hero on Saturday as his Linfield team lifted the Tennent’s Irish Cup.

Andrew netted a hat-trick against Coleraine to win the cup, just as he had done last week against Cliftonville when Linfield secured the Danske Bank Premiership title.

After the game all eyes were then on another ex-Down player Jamie Mulgrew, who as skipper of Linfield had the honour of lifting the cup. His manager David Healy, along with Mark Haughey, Jimmy Callagher, Cameron Stewart and Aaron Burns were other former players to pick up a winners’ medal on Saturday.

Well done to all.
