Looking ahead… Junior team

On the second day of the competition it’s a meeting of neighbouring counties when our Junior team play County Antrim.

2017 will see the 19th appearance at the SuperCupNI for County Antrim’s Junior team.

With the restructuring of the Milk Cup in 1992, came the introduction of the first County teams at Premier level, to be followed by Junior section teams six years later.

In 2015 Antrim’s Premier side re-wrote the history books when they defeated Mexican team Club America to become the first County team to win the SuperCupNI.

That came hot on the heels of a losing final appearance by the Junior side in 2014, when they went down 2-0 to Corinthians.

Last year the Junior team finished 3rd in the SuperCupNI Vase.

Looking ahead… Junior team

As this year’s SuperCupNI approaches, we begin to look at who our teams will be facing. The competition begins for our Junior team with a match against Cherry Orchard on Monday 24th July.

Cherry Orchard’s schoolboy section was formed in 1970 when five teams were entered into the Dublin & District League. Two years later and their U15 side had claimed a league and cup double.

A host of Orchard players have received youth international honours, while several players have progressed to play for the Republic of Ireland in the years following.

The club’s greatest achievement came in 1993 when their U16s defeated Rangers to win the Milk Cup, and at the same time becoming the first amateur club to achieve this feat.

In 2016 Cherry Orchard reached the final of the SuperCupNI Vase, defeating Tyrone 1-0.
